Severe weather leaves thousands of Augustans without power

More than 2,000 people were without power after a strong storm made its way through the Augusta area Monday afternoon.

As of 4 p.m., Georgia Power reported 1,979 customers without power in the National Hills area, along with smaller outages in West Hampton and downtown Augusta, according to Georgia Power's live outage map.

The utility company sent an alert to residents saying power should be restored in the National Hills area by 5:45 p.m.

Augusta Fire Department has yet to confirm any downed trees or powerlines.

Severe weather travels across the Augusta area

At about 3 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Martinez, Evans and Grovetown. The warning predicted 60 mph winds and possible quarter size hail.

A severe thunderstorm warning remained in effect for Aiken, North Augusta and Belvedere through 4:15 p.m. As of 4:10 p.m., 110 customers were without power in Aiken County, according to Dominion Energy's outage map.

A special weather statement was issued for Waynesboro, Sardis and Snelling through 5 p.m.
