Severe thunderstorms, damaging winds expected for Sioux Falls, large hail possible: NWS

Sioux Falls could be in for some high-risk weather beginning Thursday afternoon into late in the evening and possibly continuing into Memorial Day weekend, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected for central South Dakota Thursday night, with up to golf ball size hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph. This system will then move toward Sioux Falls later in the evening after 9 or 10 p.m. and possibly into Friday morning, according to the NWS.

Expect heavy showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 4 a.m., with the possibility for rain accumulation from a half up to three-quarters of an inch.

As this activity pushes through the area late when many are sleeping, residents should ensure they have a way to receive possible warnings, as well as a plan if things do become more severe.

This weekend’s holiday forecast can be seen below, according to the NWS website:

Friday: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 63. Breezy, with a west southwest wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Friday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 46. West northwest wind 5 to 15 mph becoming south after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 72. South wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Saturday night: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. East southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Sunday: A 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71.

Sunday night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Memorial Day: Mostly sunny, with a high near 71.
