Seventeen Varsity 845 grads to participate in SUNY Athletic Conference baseball tournament

Regular-season champion SUNY Cortland will host the SUNY Athletic Conference baseball tournament from Thursday through Saturday at Wallace Field. It is a double-elimination event.

Daily tickets are $5 for adults (13-plus), $5 for children 5-12 years old and free for all SUNYAC students with a student identification and children 4-under. It is a cash-only event.

On Thursday, Cortland hosts No. 4 Plattsburgh at noon and No. 2 New Paltz hosts No. 3 Oswego at 3:30 p.m. On Friday, Thursday’s winners meet at 10 a.m., Thursday’s losers at 1 p.m. and a losers’ bracket semifinals at 4 p.m. On Saturday, the championship bracket has games at noon and (if necessary) 3:30 p.m.

This season New Paltz (26-13) was 3-0 versus Oswego and 1-2 versus Cortland and Plattsburgh. New Paltz heads into the tournament with five consecutive wins.

Oswego (.323), Cortland (.322), New Paltz (.318) and Plattsburgh (.313) are the league’s top four hitting teams. Cortland (4.50 ERA) is the top pitching staff in the SUNYAC, with Plattsburgh (5.63), Oswego (5.79) and New Paltz (6.02) ranking 3-4-5.

The weather is expected to be cloudy on Thursday, a bit rainy on Friday and cloudy on Saturday – the schedule is subject to change.

The games will be webcast via the CortlandRedDragons.com website and SUNYAC website.

For New Paltz, Tommy Kreider (.459), Fabian Apicella (.443), Anthony Pericolosi (.343, 5 HR) and Michael Boccarossa (.338) lead the Hawks in hitting. On the mound, James McGovern owns a 3-5 mark and 6.79 ERA and Xavier Zykoff is 4-1 with a 4.74 ERA.
