Seton Hall basketball adds Chaunce Jenkins, Old Dominion guard transfer

It’s not a name that will be familiar to all fans, but Seton Hall basketball just added the most accomplished player to what is shaping up as a young roster in 2024-25.

Transfer guard Chaunce Jenkins, a 6-foot-4 redshirt junior from Old Dominion, committed Monday.

Here are three things to know about him.

1. He’s a two-time all-league honoree

This past season Jenkins averaged 15.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists while playing 32 minutes per game for the Monarchs, who finished 7-25 as head coach Jeff Jones battled health problems (and subsequently retired). He was named second-team All-Sun Belt Conference. He shot .402 from the field, .324 from 3-point range and .724 from the free-throw line. Jenkins was more efficient as a junior (.459 FGs, .366 from 3, .761 FTs), earning third-team All-Sun Belt honors. Prior to that he played sparingly at Wichita State. He has one season of eligibility remaining.

2. He was a combo guard at ODU

It’s safe to describe Jenkins as a combo guard. He played both on and off the ball at Old Dominion, sharing point guard responsibilities in each of the past two seasons. Seton Hall may need to him to run the point next winter, although head coach Shaheen Holloway (who is known for his point-guard development) would rather use multiple playmakers and not be reliant on one ball-dominant guard.

Known for his burst and leaping ability, coupled with his length, Jenkins has the physical tools to be a quality defender at the Big East level if he bulks up a bit (he’s listed at 175 pounds). He was well-regarded as a multi-positional defender at Old Dominion.

3. He’s been an underdog

Jenkins hails from Newport News, Va., and grew up playing football (as a running back) and hoops. Through middle school, he was so short that no one would choose him in a pick-up game.

"It helped me to play the way I do now," Jenkins said earlier this year. "Being underestimated just put that chip on my shoulder."

After a growth spurt, he was a three-star prospect coming out of high school.
