New Series Gives Heartbreaking Peek Inside Jackie Kennedy's Last Happy Day

John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy

This Nov. 22 marks the 60th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and to mark the occasion, National Geographic in collaboration with The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas has produced a three-part series JFK: One Day in America, a comprehensive account of that tragic moment in American history.

In this exclusive clip, we get a glimpse into Jacqueline Kennedy’s life just hours before she lost her husband to assassin Lee Harvey Oswald’s bullet as he rode in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas.

“She had been through a terrible period the four months before,” former White House Correspondent Sid Davis says. “Her baby died. Patrick Bouvier Kennedy died in August and so she was getting over that. This was her first visit out of the White House in public, so it was an uplifting thing for people to see her out and smiling.”

“Prior to that, you’d never see them hug or kiss or hold hands in public,” says Jackie’s Secret Service agent Clint Hill. “From that point on, they didn’t care who was there. They’d hold hands, they’d hug. It changed their relationship. It changed everything.”

In this footage from the special, we see a cheerful Jackie in her signature pink pillbox hat and suit attending the Presidential Breakfast in Fort Worth on that fateful day in November.

“I’d never seen her happier than she was that morning,” Davis adds.

JFK: One Day in America premieres on National Geographic on Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. ET/7c, and will stream on Disney+ and Hulu Nov. 6.
