Sephora employee who has Elon Musk’s old phone number gets unusual calls

Lyndsay Tucker doesn’t work for Elon Musk, though she has been fielding his phone calls for the past few years.

The 25-year-old San Jose, Calif., woman, who works at a Sephora store in Silicon Valley, said she finds it “amusing” she was randomly assigned an AT&T phone number that once belonged to the Tesla founder, according to NPR. A reporter there reached the number while trying to contact Musk about an unrelated story.

Tucker’s phone number was reportedly associated with a property Musk sold some time ago. When contacted by NPR, Musk acknowledged the digits were once his.

“Wow,” the Tesla founder replied by email. “That number is so old! I’m surprised it’s still out there somewhere.”

Though Musk got rid of that phone number, it reportedly remains online in several places as his current contact information. Tucker said she gets at least a couple of messages for Musk every day.

Among the stranger texts and calls she said she’s gotten were a blueprint for an artificial limb, info about coronavirus research, a volunteer looking to fly with Musk’s Space X program and a notice from the Internal Revenue Service, which Tucker was relieved to learn was not for her.

Tucker said some callers are skeptical when they reach out and she informs them they have the wrong number. NPR reports that Musk didn’t respond when asked if he gives his old phone number to people he’s trying to avoid.

According to Tucker, she has no plans of giving up her number and is entertained by some of the people who reach out to the eccentric billionaire — aside from the times Musk does something controversial and her phone suddenly lights up.

She also apologized to callers looking for Musk who don’t hear back from her.

“I’m sorry. Sometimes I don’t respond if I’m having a rough day," she told NPR. "If you didn’t get a response, it’s probably me, not him.”
