Seeking a Valentine's Day alternative? Head to this Memphis cemetery for a Breakup Shakeup concert

Nothing says love and romance quite like a concert in a cemetery.

On Friday, Feb. 23, Elmwood Cemetery is hosting the Breakup Shakeup concert. It will be a show that has performances from local musicians Emily Rooker and Dan Montgomery. The event is said to celebrate singleness and freedom among the romantic holiday.

The concert will be an immersive experience for guests. It focuses on a wedding gone wrong where instead of getting married, the couple splits. The band will play alongside the audience participation.

The performance will take place in the Chapel at Elmwood Cemetery. Start times are noon and 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person.

What to know about Elmwood Cemetery

In 1852, land was purchased by 50 men living in Memphis to establish a new cemetery outside of the city. What was originally 40 acres was expanded to 80 after the Civil War.

It is one of the oldest in Tennessee and one of the first rural garden cemeteries in the South. Its park-like setting makes it a unique place to visit as the design was common but became less popular over time.

Since it became a nonprofit, Elmwood Cemetery has become the final resting place for mayors, governors, blues singers, suffragists, general, civil rights leaders and many more people.
