SEE IT: Trivago CEO’s 7-year-old son crashes CNN interview

Travel executive Axel Hefer was clearly walking his talk during a CNN interview in which he modeled patience and staying at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

The CEO of travel-booking website Trivago was just starting his live interview with anchor Richard Quest about the impact of COVID-19 on travel when the door opened and in popped Hefer’s 7-year-old son, clamoring for attention.

While videoconferencing parents everywhere can relate to these moments, they don’t normally have to contend with such interruptions on international television.

It was the latest incarnation of “BBC Dad,” though that now-classic 2017 interruption long predated the pandemic. More recently, last July, London School of Economics and Political Science assistant professor Clare Wenham balanced a BBC interview about COVID testing and contact tracing with helping her young daughter place a unicorn picture. Like the anchors in those incidents, Quest — the host of “Quest Means Business” — took it in stride.

“Ah. And here we have a visitor,” Quest said, seamlessly incorporating the grand entrance into the interview. “Go on, who’ve we got there? Say hello, come on. Who’s this, Axel?”

“He wants to go to bed,” Hefer said, smiling tentatively from his home in Dusseldorf, Germany, and noting that his son, Victor, couldn’t hear the interview on account of his dad’s AirPods.

Victor fidgeted a bit and left the room but then came back. Hefer finally pulled him onto his lap.

“Even better,” Quest said. “Now we’re talking.”

The two adults went on to discuss travel restrictions, when they might be lifted, and how to get to that point.

“I think we have to be a bit patient, to be honest,” Hefer said, demonstrating the parental version of that very virtue.

Victor sat quietly while Quest and Hefer discussed the potential for post-COVID travel.

“Give Victor a big extra hug and some ice cream from us,” Quest said at the end, as Victor left the room. “In these difficult days I can honestly tell you on behalf of the QMB team and audience that he’s made our day. Thank you sir.”

As if on cue, Victor burst back in one last time.

“He’s back!” Quest crowed. “He’s back for his encore. You can’t keep a good actor down.”
