Luxury shipping-container pool, vintage Airstream ADU part of Oakland CA home for $5M

A new, modern home in the hills of Oakland, California — for sale for $5 million — comes with several unique features but none as distinctive as the state-of-the-art swimming pool crafted out of a shipping container.

Built by Modpools, which has upcycled nearly 1,000 shipping containers that otherwise might have been left to rust somewhere, the infinity edge pool is integrated into and surrounded by pristine wood decking. An expansive outdoor kitchen with a ceramic “egg” smoker and gas grill overlooks the pool.

The pool even has a viewing window capturing the views of surrounding hills.

The residence at 12961 Skyline Blvd. was fully designed with a mind toward environmentally-friendly and safety features. There are several.

The house is built with weathered wood beams, stone and Thermally modified wood that resists weather conditions, pests and molds. The exterior utilizes the ancient, fire-resistant Japanese wood technique called Shou Sugi Ban, which in this case is complemented by a flame-proof metal roof, according to the property listing.

The property comes with a vintage, fully updated 34-foot Airstream that could be used for an au pair’s living quarters, Airbnbn guests or an ADU for the inlaws or grandparents.

“This unique feature sets the home apart, adding a touch of classic Americana,” the property listing says about the 1982 Airstream Excella/Limited from 1982.

The iconic trailer was purchased from the original owner in Utah and restored by hand in Bend, Oregon. The Airstream is powered by a modern solar panel and oversized Tesla powerwall system for an off-the-grid lifestyle.

“This home is a masterpiece of modern design and functionality, offering the best of all worlds,” Michael Wilhelm of Compass said in an email. “From its fire-resistant exterior to its multiple leisure amenities, it’s the dream home for any discerning buyer.”

The five-bedroom, six-bathroom main residence spans 4,400 square feet on about an acre of land with sweeping views of the surrounding hills. There’s a gourmet kitchen and brass fixtures throughout.

No one has lived in the extensively remodeled home since the sellers moved out in 2020, according to Compass.

The grounds feature natural and drought-tolerant landscaping, a lighted tennis court and pickleball, bocce ball and basketball courts.

Additional amenities include:

A dual-person home office off the primary bedroom;

A 20,000 kilowatt solar system and four 13 kilowatt Tesla Powerwalls;

Four-car side-by-side garage;

Home gym set behind glass, roll-up garage-style doors;

Solarium “for natural light immersion.”

“First and foremost, this property epitomizes the vision for luxurious indoor-outdoor living,” the property listing states. “An awe-inspiring fusion of safety, sustainability, and an array of recreational amenities makes 12961 Skyline Blvd a home like no other.”

Along with Michael Wilhelm, co-listing agents are Nicole Wilhelm and Rob Levy of Compass.
