His vehicle crashed into the barrier during the Bahrain Grand Prix after hitting the car driven by Daniil Kvyat.

“Romain is doing okay, I don’t want to make a medical comment but he had light burns on his hands and ankles,” said Guenther Steiner, the principal of the Haas Formula One Team, according to Formula 1.

“Obviously he’s shaken,” added Steiner, who called the crash “scary” and thanked the rescue crews for their quick work.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile said Grosjean is undergoing further evaluation after being transported by helicopter to the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital.

“The driver was immediately attended to by emergency and medical crews,” the FIA said in a statement. “The driver self-extricated, and was conscious at all times.”

Grosjean, 34, was born in Switzerland and has been racing with Haas since 2016. He began racing Formula 1 in 2009.

“I‘m so grateful Romain is safe,” tweeted fellow Formula 1 racer Lewis Hamilton. “Wow... the risk we take is no joke, for those of you out there that forget that we put our life on the line for this sport and for what we love to do. Thankful to the FIA for the massive strides we’ve taken for Romain to walk away from that safely.”
