TV announcers at the U.S. Open mistakenly referred to Dionne Warwick as another iconic singer, but Warwick got the last laugh with a hilarious responses on social media.

The gaffe happened on Wednesday, Aug. 31, during coverage of the tennis tournament, which Warwick and Gladys Knight both attended as spectators. But commentators Mary Carillo and Chanda Rubin mixed up the two singers when Warwick appeared on screen.

Rubin said the “mistake was immediately corrected,” which she attributed to looking at the court and not the program monitor.

It didn’t stop the clip from going viral, however, as many commenters pointed out Knight and Warwick do not look similar except for their skin color.

Referencing hit songs from both singers, Warwick joked on Twitter on Sept. 1 about the mistake.

“Hi, I’m Gladys Knight,” Warwick began. “And instead of taking that midnight train to Georgia, I won’t walk on by but will say a little prayer for you.”

She also posted a Throwback Thursday photo on Instagram, but used a photo of Knight instead.

Also on Thursday, Knight responded on Twitter by taking the gaffe in stride and commenting on her relationship with the fellow soul singer.

“Dionne and I have been sisters for a long time and I hope she is as honored to be mistaken for me as I would be her,” she said. “I’m sure it was an honest mistake. It was a blessing to be in the house to see (Serena Williams’) greatness.”

After the clip went viral, many Twitter uses commented about the not-so-similar resemblance between Knight and Warwick.

“Dionne literally looks nothing like Gladys Knight. Who are these commentators?” one person said.
