Country music giant Carrie Underwood honored a fellow Oklahoma singing legend with an emotional performance that had everyone fighting back tears.

Stars showed up and showed out for another installation of CMT Giants that honored "Whenever You Come Around" singer Vince Gill. The 90-minute star-studded event featured appearances from Chris Stapleton, Cody Johnson, Keith Urban, Reba McEntire, Sting, and of course, the "Cowboy Casanova" singer herself.

When the American Idol alum took to the stage, there wasn't a single dry eye in the building.

Carrie performed an emotional rendition of Gill's "Go Rest High On That Mountain" in a sparkling baby blue gown reminiscent of a real-life Cinderella. Accompanied by a chorus of backup vocalists, as soon as Carrie sung the first note, the audience was captivated. And yes, she did indeed bring Vince Gill himself to tears during her performance of the 1994 hit song.

Toward the end of Carrie's performance, the singer struggled to hold back tears of her own as she received a standing ovation from the audience.

Fans in Carrie's comment section immediately ran to the star's Instagram to share what they really thought about the special moment:

  • "The perfect person to sing and honor this song."

  • "Gorgeous! If that performance doesn’t bring you to tears I don’t know what will. ❤️"

  • "She is on another level vocally! No other female in country comes close. Hands down one of the best! 🙌"

  • "@carrieunderwood you’re truly incredible! Even @vincegillofficial can’t hold his tears back! 🙏🏻 incredible"

In a pre-show interview on the CMT Giants red carpet, the "Denim & Rhinestones" singer admitted that she was assigned to sing "Go Rest High On That Mountain." "I probably would've picked it for myself, but it's also really hard when you're in a situation like this with other artist and be like 'No I want that one,'" she joked.

Clearly someone knew what they were doing when they gave that emotional gospel ballad to Carrie because it was easily one of the highlights of the night.
