SEE IT: Beluga whale gives birth to adorable calf at Chicago aquarium

The birth of a beluga whale went swimmingly at an aquarium in Chicago last week.

A 14-year-old beluga named Bella gave birth at the Shedd Aquarium on Friday following 15 hours of labor.

Officials at the domain are encouraged by everything they’ve seen so far from the adorable calf, whose name has not been announced.

“As the calf swam to the surface and took its first breath, it brought with it the palpable hope of new life and fresh beginnings — something we all appreciate,” the aquarium’s president and CEO, Dr. Bridget Coughlin, said in a statement Monday.

“We at Shedd Aquarium continue to be humbled by the opportunity we have to share this excitement with the public and create meaningful moments of wonder and learning through the aquatic animal world.”

The aquarium also released footage of the birth.

Veterinary officials at the aquarium have determined the newborn, who is 5-foot-3 and 139 pounds, is a male.

While it’s typical that beluga whales are born tail first, this calf entered the world headfirst.

“Despite this, the calf immediately powered itself to the surface,” the aquarium said.

In giving birth, Bella became a mother for the first time. Officials at the domain are “cautiously optimistic” about Bella’s health after welcoming the calf, the aquarium said.
