For second time in a month, resident allegedly fired shots during eviction in KC area

Kansas City police are investigating an alleged shooting during an eviction notice Thursday afternoon, marking the second time in a month shots have been fired during an eviction procedure in the Kansas City metro.

Officers responded around 12:27 p.m. to a home in the 400 block of Booth Avenue on a call that shots had been fired, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

No one was injured in the shooting, Becchina said.

The disturbance involved a landlord, their tenant and a private county process server, who arrived to serve a first notice of eviction to the resident. At the same time, the landlord started removing a vehicle and other property from the residence, Becchina said. That’s when, he said, the resident allegedly fired shots.

The resident received a summons for a municipal charge of discharge of a firearm, and the landlord was issued a summons for a municipal charge of theft.

Officers monitored while the process server completed the eviction notice process, Becchina said.

Last month, Larry Acree, an Independence resident being served with an eviction notice allegedly fatally shot Independence police officer Cody Allen and Jackson County civil process server Drexel Mack and injured two other officers. Acree was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
