Four-time Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel will be returning to the seat of a Red Bull F1 car following his retirement in 2022. The team announced that Vettel will drive his 2011 championship-winning car, the RB7, around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in September.

Vettel will be joined by former teammate and current Red Bull F1 reserve driver Daniel Ricciardo, who is also set to drive an F1 car on the 'Ring's 154-turn track layout during the team's Red Bull Formula Nürburgring event on September 9th. It's not clear if the two drivers will be sharing the RB7, or if Ricciardo will have his own F1 car to drive.

Red Bull says the RB7 in question has been retrofitted to run on synthetic e-fuel as a way to further promote Vettel's long-standing views on environmental sustainability in motorsports.

"Motorsport is my passion," Vettel said in a statement. "It's vital to me to demonstrate that racing cars can perform equally well and rapidly on synthetic, such as CO2-neutral fuel. This is no longer a future concept; it's happening right now."

A Formula 1 car on the Norschleife is a rare occurrence. It happened last in 2013 when Michael Schumacher drove a Mercedes in a demo run just after that year's Nürburgring 24-hour race. Red Bull expects to draw a crowd of over 30,000 people to the 'Ring. If you want to witness history, we suggest starting to plan now.
