New season, same result. Treasure Valley teams dominate 5A, 4A state golf tournaments

The season may change. But the schools atop the leaderboard don’t.

Idaho shifted its 5A and 4A high school golf state tournaments to the fall this year to find more times on busy courses. But the Treasure Valley continued to rack up hardware Saturday, winning three of the four team trophies — just like it did five months ago.

5A GIRLS: ROCKY MOUNTAIN THREE-PEAT

The Grizzlies’ girls golf team established itself as a dynasty, capturing its third straight state title Saturday at Rexburg’s Teton Lake Golf Course. And its lone senior bring home the individual championship.

Rocky Mountain cruised to the team trophy, shooting a two-day score of 655 (+63) to finish 46 shots ahead of Mountain View. It is the first 5A girls team to win three titles in a row since Twin Falls from 2007 to ‘09.

Emry Gibbs remained the one constant on all three of the Grizzlies’ championship teams. And she capped her high school career with her first individual medal, edging Boise’s Kelly Goulet by a single shot with a 6-over 154.

The two slugged it out over the final 18 holes, trading the lead four times while paired together. Gibbs said she lost track of the back and forth and thought the two remained tied until her teammates rushed her to celebrate.

“I was on the bridge of tears knowing that it was my last one and I had won,” Gibbs said. “I had put so much work into it.”

Gibbs said sharing the experience with her father, Rocky Mountain coach Jonathan Gibbs, made the moment even more special. He spent the final six holes trailing her.

“She just really knows her game really well, and she sticks with what she knows,” Jonathan Gibbs said. “She has a lot of confidence in her shots. That’s the big difference this year. She’ll step up and hit any shot at any time.”

The Treasure Valley’s only individual champ Saturday had plenty of help. Rocky Mountain’s Anna DaBell finished fourth with a 161 (+13). Maggie Urian took eighth at 166 (+18). Jane Barry was 14th at 174 (+26). And Natalie Nichenko finished 26th at 184 (+36).

Southern Idaho Conference teams swept the team trophies with Mountain View taking second, Boise third and Eagle fourth. And the top five individuals all hailed from the Treasure Valley with Timberline’s Ella Arnzen finishing third (160, +12) and Middleton’s Olivia Lammey fifth (162, +14).

5A BOYS: ANOTHER TITLE FOR EAGLE

The Mustangs rolled to their ninth state title and their second in the past three tournaments, firing a 595 (+19) to finish 22 shots ahead of Madison at Teton Lakes.

Eagle junior Wheaton Ennis appeared set to cruise to another individual title after shooting an 8-under 64 on Friday. But Madison’s Ashton McArthur set his home course on fire Saturday with three eagles and a 10-under 62.

McArthur finished the two-day tournament 11-under, edging Ennis by a single shot.

Ennis’ score didn’t go to waste though, propelling the Mustangs back to the top of the team race. Eagle couldn’t defend its title last spring when he moved to Arizona. But with him back, the perennial power captured another banner.

“Honestly, the difference was getting Wheaton back,” Eagle coach Jeff Dunn said. “We were solid and had a good core. But having him come back tipped the scales in our favor.”

Beau Sahr added a ninth-place finish at 148 (+4), and Zach Shipp was 11th at 151 (+7) for Eagle.

Other top local finishers include Capital’s Trevor Garus in third place (142, -2) and Nampa’s Bobby Kincaid in fourth place (144, even).

Boise also brought home a fourth-place team trophy.

4A: BISHOP KELLY BOYS REPEAT

After winning a state title in the spring on a playoff hole, the Knights avoided any drama this weekend by steamrolling the competition at Sage Lakes Golf Course in Idaho Falls.

The Bishop Kelly boys shot 290 the first day and followed it with a 285 on Friday to finish at 575 (+15) — 37 strokes clear of Shelley in second place.

“It was really special for them to be able to win again,” Bishop Kelly coach Todd Loveland said. “But also, to play their best two rounds of the year in the state championship. Having it be such a short turnaround made it even better for them.”

Four of the Knights’ five golfers returned from the spring to defend their title. Senior Dallas Jackson led Bishop Kelly for the weekend, finishing as the state runner-up with a two-day score of 136 (-4).

He shot a 4-under 66 Saturday to charge to the top of the leaderboard. But he finished in a tie with Shelley’s Nate Nelson, who birdied a playoff hole for the tiebreaker.

All five Bishop Kelly golfers finished inside the top 25. Niclas Bischoff-Jones shot 142 (+2) for fifth place. William Comstock finished at 144 (+4) for sixth place. Andrew Moodie had a 153 (+13) for 16th place. And Ayden Dyson rounded up the Knights at 161 (+21) for 24th place.

The Bishop Kelly girls also brought home hardware from Idaho Falls, finishing in second place. The Knights finished the two-day tournament at 633, 33 strokes behind Twin Falls.

Vallivue’s Claire Hall was the top local finisher in fourth place at 147 (+7), followed by Bishop Kelly’s Cara Carter in eighth place 152 (+12).
