Is "The Gilded Age" returning for a third season?

HBO isn't saying.

But on Sunday night, as the network aired the finale of Season 2, an email was sent to subscribers of its streaming service, Max, hyping the TV show's "Grand Finale."

That wording raised some eyebrows.

Any fan of the Julian Fellowes show knows, Season 2 was announced while Season 1 was still airing new episodes.

And fan websites and social media have been bemoaning that ratings for Season 2 have dropped from Season 1's hit heights, while also noting that it was one of HBO's most watched shows this fall.

Show runners have said they are ready to go ahead with more tales of New York and Newport intrigue, but HBO has declined to comment on the future of The Gilded Age − so far.

Does Rhode Island's film office have the inside scoop?

If Steven Feinberg, head of the Rhode Island Film and Television Office, knows what's up, he's not saying.

"No update yet on Season Three," Feinberg said in a text to The Providence Journal.

"We haven't heard anything definitively about Season 3," said Bill Tavares, a spokesman for the Preservation Society of Newport County, whose mansions are used as sets for both Newport and New York scenes in the series. "We hope it comes back. It's a natural opportunity to showcase the city and the state. Everybody right now is in a holding pattern."
