Apple TV+’s latest miniseries The Crowded Room is here. The new series joins a family of popular series available on the streamer, including The Morning Show, Defending Jacob, Shrinking, and Mythic Quest.

Starring Tom Holland, Amanda Seyfried, and Emmy Rossum, The Crowded Room follows a young man arrested for involvement in a shooting in 1979 New York City. Tom plays the accused, Danny Sullivan, with Amanda playing opposite him as the police interrogator assigned to his case. Emmy plays Danny’s mother, which makes sense when you realize that this series is a time-jumping one. Still, Emmy plays a young mom, getting pregnant with our protagonist at the age of 16. The series takes us through Danny’s life and the decisions that brought him to this point, sitting across from an investigator accused of murder.

How can I watch The Crowded Room?

The first three episodes of The Crowded Room drop on Apple TV+ on June 9 (that’s today!), with the following seven episodes released weekly. The season finale will air on July 28, so stay off Twitter that day if you don’t want to be spoiled.

Will there be a season 2?

Here’s what we know. Warning, it’s not a lot. The Crowded Room is billed as an anthology series, so if we do get a second season, it likely will not feature the cast we’ve come to know. If it does, it definitely won’t follow the same storyline. The best thing about an anthological show? This season could end in any number of ways, so start guessing.

And the original source material for this series is quite revealing. The series is an adaptation of Daniel Keyes’s 1981 novel The Minds of Billy Milligan. The nonfiction novel tells the story of Billy Milligan, the first person in American history to be acquitted of a crime by pleading dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as multiple personality disorder. In the late 1970s, Milligan was accused of several felonies and eventually arrested for three rapes on the Ohio State University campus. His defense team argued that his alternate personalities were responsible for the crimes, leaving Milligan entirely unaware of the encounters. In the end, he was acquitted and would spend more than a decade in psychiatric hospitals.

Back to The Crowded Room. The series is not a direct adaptation of the Billy Milligan story or the Daniel Keyes novel, but it is noted in its inception. Creator Akiva Goldsman, who announced the project in April 2021, actually based much of the story on his own life, with The Minds of Billy Milligan providing additional inspiration. Goldsman’s previous work includes I Am Legend, Cinderella Man, and A Beautiful Mind, for which he won an Academy Award. With a stellar writer behind the script and a talented cast on the screen, how can this show fail?

All of that said, it depends on whether people actually watch the show, and the reviews are not great so far. The Crowded Room was given a 20 percent approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, critics will critique, and streamers will stream. It’s too early to decide the fate of this series yet, and at the very least, it’ll keep us guessing right up to the finale.
