Search for canoeists missing in Wascott now a recovery mission

Nov. 3—WASCOTT — The search for two men who were reported missing last weekend while canoeing on the Minong Flowage in Wascott is now being considered a recovery mission.

In a news release, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office identified the two occupants as Ryan J. Busch, 26, and Andrew T. DeRock, 27, both from New Ulm, Minnesota.

Busch and DeRock went out in a canoe sometime Saturday, Oct. 28 and were reported missing to the sheriff's office at 12:46 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29 after family members located their capsized canoe. A search with drones and personnel on the water continued throughout the day Sunday until dark and resumed Monday morning. Obstacles such as weather, cold water temperatures and natural foliage in the search area are hindering efforts.

Agencies assisting in search efforts include the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Minong Fire Department, Wascott Fire Department, Gordon Fire Department, Sawyer County Search and Rescue, St. Louis County Search and Rescue and the Superior Dive Team. Bruce's Legacy, a private search organization, was contacted by the families and has also assisted in the efforts.

According to the sheriff's office, weather conditions at the time of the incident were clear, calm and with a full moon and the conditions are not considered a factor. Alcohol is also not considered a factor at this time.
