Seacoast roundup: Portsmouth boys ski team dominate giant slalom race

GILFORD – The Portsmouth High School boys ski team competed in its second giant slalom event of the season on Thursday at Gunstock Ski Resort.

And for the second time, the Clippers returned home with a convincing win.

Portsmouth had three skiers in the top four, four in the top 10, finished with a team score of 387, and won an 11-team race.

Bedford (377), Pinkerton (360), Winnacunnet (329) and Dover (320) placed second through fifth, respectively.

Portsmouth's Nick Davis was first with a combined time of 49.83 seconds. He was followed by Jack Martin (second, 50.57), Will Dedeus (fourth, 51.24), and Henry Hyland (10th, 53.85).

"This team has tremendous depth," Portsmouth coach Kyle Harrison said. "Two of our top skiers fell and kids stepped up; two races, and two victories with many boys contributing."

For Winnacunnet, Ryan Bowman placed 16th (56.15), Carter King was 19th ( 58.18), Joel Williams was 22nd (59.37) and Brodie Champney was 25th (59.89).

Gandt’s first place leads Winnacunnet girls

GILFORD – Reese Gandt had a combined time of 50.14 seconds, placing first and leading Winnacunnet to a first-place showing at a 10-team giant slalom race at Gunstock Ski Resort.

Winnacunnet had a team score of 373 points, while Bedford (364), Dover (333), Pinkerton (330), and Portsmouth (325) rounded out the top five.

Other Winnacunnet racers included Mackenzie Champney (sixth, 51.88), Maggie Maloney (11th, 55.28) and Libbey Maloney (14th, 56.06).

For Portsmouth, Addie Deihl placed 10th overall (53.82), and Noelle Gagnon was 17th overall (58.67). Teammates included Kendall Ford (27th, 1:04.56) and Elisa Ash (32nd, 1:06.97).

WELLS, Maine - York saw its three-game win streak snapped with this Class B South loss to rival Wells.

Senior McKayla Kortes led York (7-4) with 14 points. Wells is now 8-3.

"Not our best performance, that's for sure," York head coach Jess Stacy said. "We played in a state of chaos rather than our controlled offense and our controlled defense."

BEDFORD - Sophomore Anna McGuinness led Exeter with nine points and five rebounds in this Division I loss. Teammate Karli Scherpf had six rebounds and six steals.

HAMPTON - Amiyah Melaugh's 12 points led Winnacunnet (1-5) in this Division I loss. Ella Harrison led Alvirne with 20 points, while Rachel Allard had 10.

North Yarmouth Academy 49

NORTH YARMOUTH, Maine - Aleiana Booker led Traip with six points in this Class C South loss. Madelyn Rohan also played well for the Rangers.

YORK, Maine - Sophomore Reece Macdonald's 19 points led York (10-1) to this Class B South win. Wells is now 5-5 on the season.

Derek Parsons added 17 points for the Wildcats, while Lucas Bouchard had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

HAMPTON - Alta McNally's 12 points led Hampton Academy to this win. Teammate Cailan Field had six points, and Vanessa Cronin and Zoey Webber each had seven rebounds. Maddy Sullivan led Epping with 13 points.
