Science Saru is one of the best animation studios in the business, having worked on series like Devilman Crybaby, Super Shiro, Star Wars Visions, and most recently Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Now, the studio has announced its next big project, and it’s looking super slick.

It’s called Dandadan, and it’s based on a manga written and illustrated by Yukinobu Tatsu. The series tells the story of two high school students who discover that both aliens and ghosts exist, and happen to bump into them. What a coincidence!

One of them learns that they have psychokinetic powers, while the other gains the ability to enter a demonic form that gives them incredible super speed after being possessed by a ghost. Also, that ghost’s name is Turbo-Granny, and she used to cut off the genitals of people who abused girls. What a character.

The series also features an alien called Mr. Mantis Shrimp, who looks like a mantis shrimp, a yokai named Evil Eye who wants to kill all humans before accidentally becoming friends with one, and so many more. Honestly it sounds like a hoot.

Science Saru released a teaser trailer for its adaptation of the manga yesterday, and it looks extremely stylish, as you’d expect from the studio. Not much information is really present in the trailer, but we do see some of the characters in action, and it looks like there’s going to be plenty of drama, cool action scenes, and weird ghost-like fiends.

So far, Dandadan is only confirmed for a Japanese release, but we can’t imagine it’ll stay that way for long. We expect it should also run for quite some time, assuming it’s popular, as the manga series already has 130 chapters and counting.

Dandadan is expected to start airing in Japan in 2024. Assuming it gets picked up in the West, it will likely be available here at around that time too.
