The Scott Pilgrim Anime Gets a Trailer and a Release Date

Scott Pilgrim anime teaser fight

Netflix announced a while ago that Scott Pilgrim was getting an anime adaptation, and after what seems like forever waiting, we finally have our first look at it, and a firm release date for the series.

The new anime series, called Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, will be based on the incredibly popular graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, though how close it’ll stick to those graphic novels is still to be seen. Scott Pilgrim was previously adapted into a film in 2010 and, despite its fairly solid reception, failed to get a sequel, though director Edgar Wright certainly tried.

A film sequel might not have happened, but that doesn’t mean the cast of the 2010 Scott Pilgrim film are out of luck. Instead, pretty much every single one of them is returning to voice their respective characters in the anime.

From Netflix’s teaser announcement:

Michael Cera returns as the 23-year-old bass player of Sex Bob-Omb, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Johnny Simmons as young Neil, Mark Webber as Stephen Stills, Ellen Wong as Knives Chau, and Satya Bhabha, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, and Mae Whitman as the Evil Exes.

That’s a lot of returning voices! Not only does it sound great, it also looks wonderful, with a charming mix of western-style character design and fluid Japanese animation. It’s being animated by Science Saru, which previously worked on series like Super Shiro, Devilman Crybaby, and a couple of Star Wars: Visions episodes.

Not only did we get a fantastic teaser trailer, we also got a release date for the series. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will be released on Netflix on November 17, 2023, and is likely to drop all eight episodes at once.
