Scores, observations and standouts from Midlands football jamborees

Friday and Saturday offered the final tune-ups for high school football teams around South Carolina before the regular season begins this week.

Here is a look at which players, teams stood out from weekend jamborees and scrimmages:

Richland Sertoma Sportsarama

——Columbia 16, Whitmire 8——

Quarterback Jamel McDaniel ran for a touchdown and Zion Clarke added a score as the Capitals defeated the Wolverines. Kayshun Shumpert had a TD run for Whitmire.

Lower Richland 20, Dreher 14—

Marcus Smith threw a touchdown pass and Lanarion Pearson had a TD run for the Diamond Hornets, who trailed early before scoring three-straight touchdowns.

Mekhai Campfield caught the TD from Smith and the Diamond Hornets also returned an interception for a touchdown

The Blue Devils, now coached by former South Carolina Gamecocks standout Corey Jenkins, scored on their first drive. Coby Fuller connected with Caleb Berry for a touchdown.

Dreher added another score late in the game on Tyrell Bowens’ TD catch from Riley Croxton.

AC Flora 40, Keenan 0

The Falcons turned in the most dominating performance of the weekend.

Quarterback Carew Bates threw three touchdown passes, two to Chris Lofton, and running back Markel Townsend ran for two scores. Bates, a starting outfielder for the Falcons’ baseball team, had a busy day after playing in the Diamond Prospects Showcase event earlier in the day.

The Falcons also forced three turnovers, and Xavier Dow recovered two fumbles, returning one for a TD.

CA Johnson 14, Eau Claire 0

Quarterback Dejayline Jacobs and Caleb Pearson each had touchdown runs for the Green Hornets in the nightcap. Pearson filled in for running back Dawan Rice, who didn’t play.

South Beltline Classic

Heathwood Hall 7, Calhoun Academy 0

Dylan Lesesne scored the game’s only touchdown on a 6-yard run with 13:30 in the second quarter.

Cardinal Newman 20, Lee Academy 0

Three different Cardinal players had touchdown runs in the victory — Ja’Khaydin Kinard on an 85-yard run, AJ Reyes on a 30-yard run and Braxton Rodgers on a 6-yard run.

Ben Lippen 12, Thomas Sumter 0

Quarterback Dobson Ricks had a touchdown pass to Blake Bost and also had a TD run in the victory for the Falcons.

Aun & McKay Classic

Gray Collegiate impressive against Chapin, Fairfield Central

Rain ended the last two games Friday, but Gray Collegiate, Fairfield Central and Chapin returned Saturday morning and played a quarter each against each other.

Quarterback Riley Staton threw a pair of touchdown passes to Devin Johnson as the War Eagles defeated Chapin 16-0.

Against Fairfield Central, BJ Montgomery had a TD run and Justin Pauling returned an interception for a score in the 14-6 win over the Griffins.

Fairfield bounced back against Chapin as Jai Boyd scored on first play of the quarter and Cam McMillion threw a TD pass to Jalian Yarborough in the 12-0 win.

Donovan Watkins had three interceptions for FC in the two quarters.

Friday

——Irmo 35, Mid-Carolina 7——

Irmo quarterback AJ Brand showed why he has a chance to be one of the area’s top quarterbacks the next few years. Brand threw a pair of touchdowns and also ran for two scores in the victory. One of Brand’s TDs was to Telvin Smith, who also returned a punt for a touchdown.

Anthony Wicker had M-C’s touchdown on the team’s first drive after recovering the opening kickoff.

——Spring Valley 7, Newberry 6——

Not much went right offensively for Spring Valley until the final drive of the game. But the Vikings put together a nice drive that was capped off by Hector Miranda’s touchdown run with 35 seconds to go. Miranda lost one of his shoes on the run.

Miranda was filling in at running back for injured regulars Evan Javis and KJ Jefferson. Spring Valley played two quarterbacks in Aiden Jones and Keshaun Osby.

Newberry controlled much of the game and took a 6-0 lead with 6:38 left in the first quarter when Bryce Satterwhite threw a TD pass to Kyon Daniels.

The Bulldogs have a new coach in Cedric Jeter, who replaced hall-of-famer Phil Strickland. Newberry has some talent on offense at receiver and young quarterback in Satterwhite.

Lexington 1 Sportsarama

——Airport 21, Pelion 0——

Kyle Chavis threw two TD passes, including one to Duke commitment Apollos Cook. The Eagles scored three times in the first quarter. Logan Crawford had the other TD catch and Marcus Dwyer had a TD run.

The Sportsarama was moved from White Knoll to River Bluff after heavy rain earlier Friday.

——Lexington 14, Batesburg-Leesville 7——

Jonah Norris had a TD run and Montrell Byrd returned a fumble for a touchdown in the Wildcats victory.

Lexington is coming off a nine-win season after going 0-6 in 2020. The Wildcats have several key pieces back and have one of the area’s best running games.

Korey Williams had a TD for Batesburg-Leesville, which has a new coach in Greg Lawson.

——River Bluff 13, Ridge View 0——

Parker Murray had a touchdown pass to Stephen Collier and Cooper Johns had a TD run for the Gators.

The game was called off because of weather and will not be finished. The final game of the night between Gilbert and White Knoll was canceled.

River Bluff is coming off a two-win season last year but has shown promise in the preseason and has playmakers on both sides of the way.

Running back Jarvis Green and quarterback Aliam Appler each had TD runs as the Silver Foxes won at Football City Kickoff Classic in Rock Hill.

DF’s Chase Meggett also had a fumble recovery for a touchdown

——Saluda vs. Greenwood, canceled——

Saluda’s matchup at the Greenwood Jamboree was canceled after a fight among fans broke out during the Emerald-Ware Shoals matchup, according to the Greenwood Index Journal.
