The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control conducts inspections every month and scores establishments based on their practices.

Here are some common questions and answer, provided by the S.C. Department of Health andEnvironmental Control.

Question: How often are routine inspections performed in Horry County?

Answer: Routine Inspections are performed 1 to 4 times per year.

Q: What is a follow-up inspection?

A: A follow-up inspection is conducted within 10 days of a routine inspection. To do just that to follow-up and see if corrections have been made.

Q: Exactly what is graded on a restaurant inspection?

A: There are five major risk factors:

  1. Food Contact Equipment Cleanliness - the inspector, looks for food build-up on the equipment.

  2. Cooking Temperatures - are food being cooked and reheated to a certain temperature, within a safe range.

  3. Employee Health - Are employees who are sick not coming to the facility to work.

  4. Food Sources - Are the foods coming from a safe source and can the facility prove that.

  5. Food Holding Temperatures - Are the foods being stored at a safe hot temperature and stored at cold holding temperatures.

What do the grades mean, what is passing?

The restaurants are graded on a 100-point scale. Upon completion of an inspection, the letter grade is posted near the entrance of the establishment.

  • Grade A - The restaurant has scored 87 points or above.

  • Grade B - The restaurant has scored 87-78 points. Which requires improvement.

  • Grade C - The restaurant has scored less than 78 points. Food safety practices need significant improvement.
