How to Score $4 Movie Tickets for National Cinema Day

Prices of movie tickets are crashing in honor of National Cinema Day this weekend.

For one day only, moviegoers can see any movie–including blockbuster films Barbie, Oppenheimer and Blue Beetle, as well as new features Retribution, Golda, Bottoms, and more–at any time regardless of format (IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D) for just $4 per ticket at participating theaters.

Theater owners announced on Monday that the second annual National Cinema Day will be held this Sunday, Aug. 27. and more than 3,000 locations are getting in on the action this year, which, as ABC first reported, accounts for most of the movie theaters in the U.S., including the two most popular cinema chains: AMC and Regal.

Along with the discounted ticket prices, which roll in at around half the price of the average movie ticket in the U.S. according to data collected by the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) in 2022, AMC is sweetening the deal with a sprinkle of savings on snacks, offering $5 small popcorn and drinks all day long.

The first-ever National Cinema Day was hosted last September by the Cinema Foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of NATO, and was considered to be a massive success after an estimated 8.1 million moviegoers took advantage of the discount tickets during the end-of-summer event.

At the time, the promotion advertised $3 tickets at participating theaters and the biggest film of the season was Top Gun: Maverick.

This year is expected to be just as successful–if not more–despite the slight price increase, so long as the record-breaking turnout for "Barbenheimer" doesn't slow down and fans continue to show up in numbers for highly-anticipated films, like the action/adventure Gran Turismo and thriller Our Father the Devil, both of which debut in theaters this Friday, Aug. 25.

Our advice? If you're looking to see a movie for cheap–purchase your tickets or reserve your seat ahead of this weekend.
