The Scoop on Jennifer Esposito's Possible Return for 'Blue Bloods'

Will Estes, Tom Selleck, Len Cariou, Donnie Wahlberg

One of the longest-running police procedurals in television history, Blue Bloods will return for its 14th season but most likely not before January 2024. It isn’t on the Fall schedule, but CBS is airing “classic episodes” in the interim—and they were voted on by America.

And even as it’s labeled a police procedural, the truth is it's more of a family drama, the family being the Reagans, the first family of New York law enforcement, with Tom Selleck starring as Police Commissioner Frank Reagan as well as the patriarch of the family as father to Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), Erin (Bridget Moynahan) and Jamie (Will Estes).

Here is what we know about Season 14 so far:

When does Blue Bloods return?

Now that the writers strike is over, they can get back in the room and begin writing scripts for the season. The only problem is they still need the actors’ strike to end in order to get back into production. Look for the series to return on Friday nights—possibly in January 2024. Exact date TBA.

What time is Blue Bloods on?

Blue Bloods will air on Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Which major recurring characters will return for Blue Bloods Season 14?

Also expected to return are Frank Reagan’s staff, including Det. Abigail Baker (Abigal Hawk), Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Garrett Moore (Gregory Jbara), and Lieutenant Sidney Gormley (Robert Clohessy).

Over in the D.A.’s office, we should see the return of DA Investigator Anthony Abetemarco (Steve Schirripa).

And then, of course, Joe Hill (Will Hochman) will be in and out as a family member and also a member of the NYPD.

Also, back for family dinners will be Andrew Terraciano, who plays Danny’s youngest son Sean, who is still at home, but getting close to going off to college.

Which Blue Bloods cast members left the show in season 14?

Treat Williams only recurred a couple of episodes a season, but his role as Frank’s friend Lenny Ross, a retired detective-turned-writer, was always a welcome addition to the cast. Now, it will have to be retired due to Williams’ unexpected death on June 12, 2023, as a result of injuries from a motorcycle accident.

Are there any spoilers for Blue Bloods Season 14?

As the writers strike just ended, there are no scripts at this point. Nothing has been leaked, but that doesn’t stop us from speculating.

The one idea that does cross our minds is the potential return of Jennifer Esposito’s character Jackie Curatola. Health issues caused Esposito to leave the series back in 2012, but her return as the Chief of Police in Suffolk County and working again with Danny to track down a serial killer felt like they had unfinished business.

Another is: Now that Erin is no longer running for district attorney, she and Jack (Peter Hermann) can spend more time together.

Will there still be a family dinner each week on Blue Bloods Season 14?

Sunday family dinners are the one thing that can always be counted on each episode with Frank and Henry overseeing the family.

What happened at the end of Blue Bloods Season 13?

The Season 13 finale, "Forgive Us Our Trespasses," saw the return of serial killer Dr. Leonard Walker (Mather Zickel) and with him the return of detective Jackie Curatola, who teamed up with Danny to try to track him down. Walker attempted to make Jackie his next victim, but she managed to fight him off and he got away. Walker remains on the loose, leaving the door is open for Esposito to return in Season 14 if that storyline is picked up.

Also in the finale, Erin, who had been planning all season to run for New York's District Attorney makes the announcement at Sunday dinner that she has changed her mind.

And, in a nice touch, the episode wrapped up with the iconic family dinner seeing the return of a few faces that had been missing: Danny’s oldest son Jack (Tony Terraciano), who was last seen in the Season 12 premiere, and Erin’s daughter, Nicky (Sami Gayle), who was last seen in Season 11.
