With Statue of Liberty as backdrop, Sen. Chuck Schumer will speak on immigration at DNC

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) revealed that he will speak on immigration in his speech Tuesday to the Democratic National Convention — and the Statue of Liberty will serve as his backdrop.

The powerful Senate leader told The Daily News he will emphasize the importance of giving millions of undocumented immigrants a chance to build permanent lives for themselves in their new country.

He said the famous poem inscribed on the base of Lady Liberty offers the most eloquent statement about making America a beacon of hope to newcomers.

“The Statue of Liberty will be right over my shoulder,” Schumer said in an exclusive interview Monday. “It says: ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses.‘ And that’s one of the things I will be talking about.‘”

“The main thrust is going to be one of giving a path to citizenship to millions,” Schumer said.

Schumer said he will spotlight the Democratic push to retake the Senate from Republicans as well as ousting President Trump.

The party needs to flip at least three GOP seats to win control of the crucial upper chamber, which could allow Democrats a chance to enact immigration reform among a raft of other big-ticket policy goals if Joe Biden also wins the White House.

“We’ve got to take America back and the fight for the Senate is very important to doing just that,” Schumer said.

Schumer will deliver the speech Tuesday evening at the 9 p.m. hour from the historic landmark Liberty Warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn, which offers a stunning vista of New York Harbor and Lady Liberty. The location has special meaning to Schumer because his daughter, Jessica, held her wedding there in 2016.

Schumer admitted that he’ll be cheerleading a bit for Biden and Kamala Harris, the newly minted vice presidential pick.

But he may have gotten a little ahead of himself when he bragged that “Harris will make a great president,” before quickly correcting the slip of the tongue.

“I’ll be speaking about what a great president Joe Biden will be,” Schumer said. “And Kamala Harris will make a great vice president.”
