Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe County school districts will be open Friday following a two-day closure because of Hurricane Ian, district superintendents announced Thursday morning.

Schools in Miami-Dade and Broward have been closed since Wednesday ahead of Ian, which made landfall on Florida’s west coast as a powerful Category 4 storm around 3 p.m. Wednesday. Monroe County public schools in the Florida Keys have been closed since Tuesday.

In a video, Broward County Superintendent Vickie Cartwright said officials anticipate all campuses reopening, but in the event that a campus is not ready to reopen, the school principal will let families know by 5 p.m. Thursday.

Miami-Dade Superintendent Jose Dotres in a tweet said the decision to reopen schools came after “a complete assessment of all campuses.” All adult, after-care programs, athletics, and school activities will also resume, according to officials.

During the county’s Emergency Management conference call on Thursday morning, Monroe County Superintendent Teri Axford said officials saw “no reason not to be in session tomorrow. Schools will be open tomorrow.”
