School closings: Metro Nashville schools, others closed on Monday due to icy roads

Schools in many Middle Tennessee districts will be closed on Monday as the region continues to face temperatures below freezing and some dangerous road conditions.

Metro Nashville Public Schools and several others announced Sunday that they will be closed Monday, Jan. 22. The following school districts announced closures as of 3:30 p.m. Sunday:

  • Bedford County Schools: The School Age Care Program will be open only at the Learning Way Elementary location.

  • Cheatham County Schools: Extended day care will be open from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Students should be a lunch.

  • Dickson County Schools: Snow care will be available at Oakmont Elementary School and Stuart-Burns Elementary School from 7 a.m.-6 p.m.

  • Franklin Special School District: The Morning and Afternoon Care program will be open from 7 a.m.-5p.m. at Johnson Elementary School. Students should bring a lunch.

  • Houston County Schools

  • Lebanon Special School District: The School Age Child Care program will be open at one location, Coles Ferry Elementary.

  • Maury County Schools: Athletic practices and other extracurricular activities will be held at the discretion of each school's principal.

  • Metro Nashville Public Schools: All before and after school care is cancelled except for providers with an inclement weather site. MNPS instructed parents to check with their providers for that information.

  • Murfreesboro City Schools: The Extended School Program's inclement weather sites will be open, with a "slight change in one location." Parents are instructed to check their email for this information.

  • Robertson County Schools

  • Sumner County Schools

Sumner County Director of Schools Scott Langford said in a video uploaded to the school district's Facebook page that he made the decision after driving around the county and finding that many side roads are still iced over.

"Y'all, the roads have been tough this week," Langford said. "[Road crews] have worked endlessly trying to make sure they could get our roads back to snuff. But when it's sub-zero temperatures or close to zero temperatures, salt doesn't work and it just takes a little time."

Langford said he's hopeful that schools will be open on Tuesday and that the school district will make an announcement by 5 p.m. Monday. Many other school districts said they will give an update around that same time.

"We are hopeful that Monday gives us a big thaw, and forecasted temps do support that. But will it be enough? We will gauge things very closely throughout the day tomorrow," Wilson County Schools said in a post on Facebook.

Wilson County Schools employees are being asked to report to work at the Administrative and Training Complex "on a precautionary basis" but can work from home if needed.
