A North Carolina man died days after he was elected to a local school board, shocking his community.

Will Crodick, 53, died of a heart attack on Nov. 11, three days after he was elected to the Currituck Board of Education, according to The Daily Advance.

Crodick also served on the board from 2016 to 2020, the outlet reported.

“I look forward to serving on the Board of Education to work for you,” Crodick wrote on his Facebook page on Nov. 9. “I feel confident that changes can be made for the betterment of Currituck County Schools. I remain committed to putting students first.”

News of Crodick’s unexpected death devastated members of the community, many of whom shared photos and memories of the school-board elect on Facebook.

“To me Will was a hero. He literally gave his life working to make things better for the children of Currituck County,” Josh Bass, the Currituck Chamber of Commerce president, wrote on Facebook. “Will’s legacy will live on not just in the men his sons will grow up to be, but it will live on in the lives of thousands of children in this county his work touched.”

Moyock Farm Market shared a photo of Crodick and called him a “great asset to our community,” its post said.

The Currituck County High School planned a celebration of life for Crodick on Nov. 16.

“Currituck County Schools is deeply saddened by the news of the sudden passing of Mr. Will Crodick and extends our deepest condolences to the Crodick family,” Currituck County Schools said in a news release, WAVY reported. “Mr. Crodick had a great passion for education, and his loss will be felt throughout our community. We extend our deepest respects and hold the Crodick family in our thoughts and prayers at this time.”

Currituck County is about 190 miles northeast of Raleigh.
