On the Scene: Get struck by ‘Kid Lightning,’ shop the Wintry Market this weekend in Boise

Get struck by ‘Kid Lightning’

Life is like a game show. Or is it? That’s the question that has been noodling around Boise LED artistic director Lauren Edson’s brain for a while now.

It embodies “the individual ego versus the group,” Edson said in an interview. The game show format is a cultural phenomenon that connects us through the decades. As the format evolves — from studio sets to exotic islands — so do we, she said.

So, her take is a flashback to the 1970s, with a game show called “Kid Lightning,” complete with eager contestants, a cheesy host and a big prize on the line. And it’s all done to an original soundtrack by composer Andrew Stensaas, and his group of musicians who will perform live during the concert.

If you’ve not experienced an LED show yet, this is a great chance to introduce yourself to a group that combines Edson’s choreography, Stensaas’s music, with an incredible company of Boise-based and national dancers, actors and a bevy of theater artists that will transform the Morrison Center stage.

For the first time, you have two chances to catch this performance: 8 p.m. Nov. 19, 6:30 p.m. Nov. 20, Morrison Center. $31.75, $41.75, $62.25 at MorrisonCenter.com.

Xtreme Holiday Xtravaganza

The 17th Xtreme Holiday Xtravaganza returns to the Egyptian Theatre, 700 W. Main St., in downtown Boise, after two years of virtual events. So, from Dec. 18-19, a group of local musicians will converge on the Egyptian stage for two nights of music, humor, holiday cheer and fundraising to support the Interfaith Sanctuary Homeless Shelter.

The lineup, led by the event’s founders, Boise jazz man Curtis Stigers and his wife Jodi Stigers, who is Interfaith’s executive director. It also includes Bill Coffey, Jake Stigers, Minor Paradox, Steve Fulton, Eilen Jewell, Belinda Bowler, Andy Byron, Emily Tipton, Steve Baker and the Lonesome Jetboat Ramblers, Amuma Says No and more.

Tickets are on sale now. If you want to become a donor or volunteer, tickets are $25 with a code through Nov. 30, otherwise, they are $35 at InterfaithSancturary.org.

This popular event comes after Stigers does his annual one-nighter with his band at the Egyptian. If you haven’t experienced a hometown concert with this international jazz artist, it is not to miss. Click here for more info and tickets.
