Does your family prefer to travel for the holidays or stay home? Many South Carolina residents have researched chilly European destinations to visit during the Christmas season, a report says.

The study, conducted by Iceland.org, a travel and tour management company in Iceland, looked at Google Ads data to discover which European country each state wants to visit this Christmas. This was done by examining the average monthly search volume for vacation-related searches on a state-by-state basis for the top 25 coldest destinations in Europe, based on their average temperature in December, according to the study.

Iceland was the clear winner for both South Carolina and the country as a whole. The travel destination accumulated a total of 850 average searches per month from residents of the Palmetto State and was also the most popular Christmas destination in every other state with the exception of West Virginia, where Germany was ranked as the most searched.

South Carolina’s top five dream Christmas destinations, according to the study, are:

  1. Iceland - Searches for vacationing in Iceland receive a combined total of 850 average searches per month.

  2. Germany - 660 average searches per month.

  3. Switzerland- 420 average searches per month.

  4. Croatia - 270 average searches per month.

  5. Norway - 230 average searches per month.

Throughout the country, Iceland landed the ‘most-searched’ position with a total of 69,420 total searches. Countrywide, Americans search for the phrase ‘Iceland flights’ an average of 24,460 times a month and ‘Iceland vacation’ 7,660 times, according to the report.

Germany was ranked as the second most popular winter destination as Americans searched the country a total of 39,400 times. “Known as the nation that first introduced Christmas markets, it is fitting that Germany ranks so highly on the list,” explained Iceland.org.

In third, Switzerland has garnered a total of 32,160 searches from interested U.S. citizens. The report listed the “snow-capped Alps” and “picture perfect towns” as reasons Americans would want to choose Switzerland as their Christmas destination.

“Whether you are interested in festive Christmas markets, European cultural traditions, or snow-covered landscapes, Europe is the ultimate destination to visit around Christmas time,” a spokesperson from Iceland.org commented on the findings within the report.
