Driving through Greenville was deadlier than in any other county in South Carolina this year, the latest state data shows.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, with just a couple of days left in the year, Greenville County had 95 reported vehicle fatalities in 2022. The next highest was Horry County with 70 deaths, followed by Charleston with 62 deaths. Barnwell County had the fewest at one reported fatality.

Greenville is no stranger to having a high rate of vehicle fatalities. The county reported 93 vehicle deaths in 2021 and 82 in 2020.

Overall, South Carolina is at a three-year low for vehicle fatalities, SCDPS statistics show.

There have been 1,015 vehicle deaths reported in 2022, compared to 1,179 in 2021 and 1,059 in 2020. The state reported a fewer 1,001 deaths in 2019.

July was the month with the most vehicle fatalities at 106 this year, whereas December has had by far the fewest at 38 deaths.

The statistics also show that of the total number of vehicle deaths in 2022, 137 involved motorcycles. People on bicycles accounted for 21 deaths and 163 killed by vehicles were pedestrians.
