Save at the market this summer. Aldi is lowering prices on sirloin steak, cookies and more

Your total at checkout may be slightly less than previous visits the next time you’re at Aldi.

That’s because the grocer is dropping its prices on more than 250 items through Sept. 2, Labor Day, Aldi announced on May 2.

“ALDI is always looking for ways to help customers save money, but with more experts warning of persistent inflation, the time was right to deliver even greater discounts on our already low prices for the second year in a row,” said Aldi U.S. President Dave Rinaldo in the news release. “We don’t want food prices to hold people back from getting together with friends and family or spending time outdoors this season.”

Consumer prices have been rising sharply in the Midwest since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The “typical Iowa household” now has to spend $1,006 more per month than in 2020 to “maintain the same standard of living,” according to the Common Sense Institute Iowa’s March 2024 report on inflation in the Midwest. The report estimates food prices have risen $150 per month.

The report, based on data from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index shows the biggest increase came from March 2021 to March 2022 when food prices in the Midwest rose an estimated 10.3%. Increases have slowed since, with prices jumping 2% from March 2023 to March 2024.
