Saturday's polls: Muhammad unseats Dawson in council race, West Monroe millage fails

West Monroe voters failed to pass a millage for public safety and public works equipment by 11 votes and an incumbent Monroe City Council member lost her seat following Saturday's elections.

Verbon Muhammad won the Monroe City District 5 election with all precincts reporting against incumbent Kema Dawson. Dawson was first elected to the Monroe City Council following the July 11, 2020, primary elections to fill the District 5 seat left vacant by Eddie Clark.

Councilman − District 5, City of Monroe

  • Kema Dawson, Democrat − 363 votes, 35%

  • Verbon Muhammad, Sr., Democrat − 660 votes, 65%

City of West Monroe − 4.75 Mills (10 Yrs.)

  • Yes: 283 votes, 49%

  • No: 294 votes, 51%
