CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

Curtis went back-to-back in the 4A state bracket, led by two-time tournament MVP Zoom Diallo, beating 4A South Puget Sound League rival Olympia for a third time this season in Saturday night’s championship game. The Vikings also bested the Bears for the 4A SPSL tournament and 4A West Central/Southwest district tournament championships earlier this season. This state championship is the fourth in Curtis’ program history. The Vikings beat top-seeded Mount Si for last season’s title in the Tacoma Dome, and also won 4A at the tournament site in 2013, beating Jackson in the final. Curtis won its first championship with a victory over Battle Ground in 1971 at the UPS Fieldhouse in Tacoma. The Vikings are the third team to win back-to-back titles in the 4A boys bracket in the past decade, joining Gonzaga Prep (2018 and 2019) and Federal Way (2015 and 2016). Curtis coach Tim Kelly also became the eighth boys basketball coach in state history to win a fifth championship with the victory over Olympia. Kelly has guided the Vikings to each of their past three titles, and won a pair of 4A championships with Lincoln in back-to-back seasons in 2001 and 2002. He remains the only boys coach in history to coach more than one program to multiple championships.

DID YOU KNOW?

Each of the top three placers in this season’s 4A bracket — Curtis, Olympia and Federal Way — are representatives of the West Central District, and separated by less than 50 miles along I-5. This is the first time in nearly two decades a single district has produced the top three finishers in the 4A tournament — the most recent being in 2004, when the WCD had the top four placers in Kentwood, South Kitsap, Bethel and Mount Tahoma.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

Eastlake won its second championship in four seasons with Saturday’s victory over Camas, denying a late comeback bid from the Papermakers, who entered the weekend without an in-state loss. The Wolves built an early lead that reached as many as 14 points in the first half, and held on late, making 12 free throws inside the final three minutes in response to a late run of 3-pointers from Camas. Northern Arizona-bound forward Ava Schmidt was voted the tournament MVP. The Wolves are now 2-for-2 in championship game appearances, also besting Lewis and Clark for the 4A title in 2019 in their first-ever appearance.

DID YOU KNOW?

Two of the six placers in the 4A girls bracket took home trophies for the first time in their histories — and both are South Sound schools. Making the program’s first state tournament appearance since 1999, Tahoma picked up a pair of wins in the Tacoma Dome to lift the third-place trophy. The Bears earned a first-round bye with a win over No. 6 Davis in the regional round last week, beat No. 12 Gonzaga Prep in the quarterfinals Thursday, and following a loss to eventual runner-up Camas in the semifinals, rallied for a win over Kamiakin on Saturday afternoon. Emerald Ridge returned to the 4A bracket after making its first-ever appearance last winter, and earned a sixth-place trophy. The Jaguars upset defending state champion and top-seeded Woodinville in the regional round to advance directly to the quarterfinals. They lost to Kamiakin there on Thursday, but rallied with a double-digit win over 4A SPSL rival Bellarmine Prep in a loser-out game Friday afternoon to guarantee the school’s first trophy.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

Garfield added its 16th state championship in program history with Saturday night’s win over O’Dea — and fifth title in the past nine tournaments after winning 4A in 2014, and 3A in 2015, 2018, 2020 and now 2023. Legend Smiley poured in 30 points — the most scored by a player in any of Saturday’s four title games — to guide the 3A Metro League power to its latest championship, and earned tournament MVP honors. The title win was also the fourth for former Garfield, Washington and NBA star Brandon Roy as a coach. Roy also guided the Bulldogs to their 3A titles in 2018 and 2020, and led Nathan Hale to a championship in the 3A bracket in 2017.

DID YOU KNOW?

Garfield’s victory sends the 3A championship trophy back to the 3A Metro League for the 10th time in the past 11 tournaments. The only disruption during the league’s decade-long reign in the 3A tournament was last season, when Auburn swept three Metro League teams — Garfield, Seattle Prep and Rainier Beach — on the way to a title.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

The three-peat is complete. Garfield upended Lake Washington in Saturday night’s 3A girls title game for the third consecutive season to earn a third consecutive championship. Katie Fiso, who was voted the tournament MVP, filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win. The title is the sixth in program history for Garfield, which also becomes the first girls team to win three straight titles in the 3A tournament. The Bulldogs are only the fifth girls team in state history to win three in a row in any classification, joining Lewis and Clark (4A), Colfax (1A), Lynden Christian (1A) and Cle Elum-Roslyn (1A).

DID YOU KNOW?

There were 39 scoring-rebounding double-doubles completed in the 60 state tournament games played in the Tacoma Dome this season — and the 3A girls tournament had the most with 11. Lincoln freshman Oliviyah Edwards had three of those double-doubles in a stellar Tacoma Dome debut, and averaged 15.3 points and 13.8 boards across four games in a sixth-place finish for the Abes. Edwards’ 55 total rebounds were the most of any player in the four tournaments by a large margin. Lincoln’s 6-foot-3 forward just missed out on completing double-doubles in all four contests, tallying nine points and a single-game tournament-high 20 boards in an opening-round win over No. 13 Everett on Wednesday. Edwards posted double-doubles in each of the Abes’ final three games in the Tacoma Dome, with 20 points and 13 rebounds against Lake Washington in the quarterfinals Thursday, 14 points and 10 boards in a consolation win over No. 8 Meadowdale on Friday and 18 points and 12 rebounds against Stanwood in Saturday’s trophy round.
