The Sandtrap, highly anticipated restaurant on Riverview Highlands Golf Course, now open

After more than six months of an interior facelift and plenty of renovations, Downriver restauranteur Jeremy Syrocki has opened the Sandtrap, a highly anticipated venue in the Downriver community of Riverview.

Located next to the Riverview Highlands Golf Course, the Sandtrap is the former Sportsmen's Den. The location is connected to the One | Nine Event Venue, which includes a wedding chapel. Syrocki purchased the restaurant and event venue from its longtime owners, the Orlando family, which operated as the Sportsmen's Den, Orlando Familia Banquet Center and the Wedding Chapel on the Green.

(Full disclosure, my husband and I were the first couple married at the Chapel on the Green 23 years ago and had a reception at the Sportsmen’s Den.)

The Sandtrap's operating partners are his brother Jeff Syrocki and sister-in-law Christine, Jeremy Syrocki says.

On the menu are a variety of starters including nachos with corned beef, couscous balls with marinara sauce and coconut shrimp. Some items have golf-related names, like "putters" — wontons with corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut filling served with honey mustard — and the "Bunkers Club sandwich." There are more than a dozen handhelds, from shawarma to tacos to a club sandwich; a half dozen burger options, from classic beef to salmon; and more than a half a dozen salads. According to an online menu, the main dishes include steaks, fish and chicken. Prices range $12 to $42. There's a full bar menu of beer, wines by the glass and bottle and cocktails. A Sunday brunch buffet is expected.

With a wall of back windows amid booth and table seating, the Sandtrap has a clear view of one of the three Riverview Highlands golf courses. The overall vibe is casual, with a sports bar-ish feel.

A sneak peek of the renovated space on Monday revealed an area near the stage with cozy banquette-style seating, with small tables and comfy lounge-style chairs. The space is bright with warm sage-hued half walls, reupholstered booths and new flooring. There's bar seating, plenty of high-top tables and booth seating. A renovation of the outdoor patio is planned which overlooks the golf course. The overall Sandtrap space has capacity for more than 200 people.
