Sand Creek's gets Marv Cox as boys basketball head coach

SAND CREEK — Marv Cox, who has coached Addison the past four seasons, is the new varsity boys basketball coach at Sand Creek.

The Madison graduate has been hired, pending formal board approval, Sand Creek Athletic Director Steve Walters said Friday. Cox resigned from Addison last week.

“With all of the changes going on at Addison, I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Cox said.

Cox will take over duties from Walters, who coached the Aggies one season and led a remarkable turnaround from zero wins the team had in 2022-23 to 10 last year.

“Marv is someone who will come in and do things the right way and get the most out of our players,” Walters said. “It was important to get things going so we can have a full summer program for our players to get a jump on next season.”

Cox coached Addison four seasons, going 24-59, including 7-17 this past season. Prior to that he was an assistant at Addison for four years.

“I’m excited,” Cox said. “One of the things I like about Sand Creek is all of the younger coaches are in place. At Addison, it seemed every year I had to find all new coaches for all of the levels. Sand Creek has coaches in place and a couple of them are teachers, so they are there.”

Walters said Cox has a vision for the Aggie program.

“We’re going to do some things in the summer, whether or not it is camps or open gyms,” Cox said. “That’s one of the things, the other is to get a system in place, a base offense, to get it into the whole program. As kids move up the different levels, that helps tremendously.”

Cox is a 1978 Madison graduate. He played for Jim Hartley at Madison during some highly successful seasons for the Trojans. One of his teammates was Hudson coach Jeff Webster.

“Right out of high school I was interested in coaching,” Cox said. “The more I learned about the insides and outs of coaching, the more I wanted to do it. Jim was a great influence on me. He taught me a lot about X’s and O’s as a young kid. It helped me a lot.”

Cox started coaching years ago in Jackson and has spent time with Jackson Northwest and Vandercook Lake before going to Addison.

Cox owns a tool and die business in Jackson and lives in Adrian.

“I’m semi-retired,” Cox said. “I have a lot of time on my hands.”
