Samantha Bee mocks Andrew Cuomo’s ‘half-assed’ apology in brutal takedown segment

“Full Frontal” host Samantha Bee mocked embattled Gov. Cuomo’s “half-assed” apology regarding sexual misconduct claims made against him and suggested he largely looked good in 2020 because most everything else was so bad.

In her Wednesday night show on TBS, the former “Daily Show” correspondent addressed the trio of harassment claims made against the once-popular governor. She started her takedown by posting a statement on screen where Cuomo expressed regret early this week that, according to him, he was misunderstood.

“I acknowledge some of the things I have said have been misinterpreted as an unwanted flirtation. To the extent anyone felt that way, I am truly sorry about that,” that statement reads.

Bee wasn’t buying it.

“Then he put his hand on his own half-assed apology, patted it once and asked it to make him a dirty martini,” she joked.

According to Bee, former President Donald Trump’s dangerous misinformation about COVID-19 left New Yorkers looking for a leader during the deadly pandemic and Cuomo, by comparison, was a breath of badly needed fresh air. The segment then showed clips of celebrities and performers praising the governor in 2020, which Bee implied haven’t aged so well. One of those snippets included comedian Ellen DeGeneres declaring herself a “Cuomo-sexual” and an MSNBC anchor literally calling him a hero.

“Unsurprisingly over the past few months, we’ve been reminded that Andrew Cuomo is not a hero, he’s an elected official hired by us to do a job,” Bee said.

In April, Long Island matchmaker Maureen Tara Nelson told the Daily News that a survey taken by her clients revealed that among New Yorkers, Cuomo and his brother CNN anchor Chris Cuomo outranked even pop stars the Jonas Brothers as the most desirable men in America.

Cuomo soon after gave an interview to 1010 WINS to clarify that while he is single, his brother is married.

In her segment, Bee also tore into other controversies swirling around Cuomo, including allegations that he misrepresented the number of COVID deaths at nursing homes. Cuomo denies wrongdoing.

“Just because Gov. Cuomo stepped into a leadership void during the pandemic doesn’t mean he gets a pass on his consistently sh---y behavior,” the comic charged.

Cuomo offered a new apology at a Wednesday afternoon press conference acknowledging he now understands he “acted in a way that made people feel uncomfortable,” said it was unintentional and that he “truly and deeply apologize(s)” for what’s happened.

“I feel awful about it and, frankly, I am embarrassed,” he said.

Cuomo said he will not resign over any of the claims being made against him.
