An explosive fight about WiFi between Salvador Ramos and his mother culminated with him moving out and in with his grandmother, who was shot minutes before the massacre, allegedly carried out by her grandson at Robb Elementary School.
Juan Alvarez, who has been in a relationship with Ramos’ mother, Adriana Reyes, for about year, told NBC News the 18-year-old left the Uvalde home they all shared about two months ago. Their neighbor, 54-year-old Becky Flores, said at least eight cops showed up at residence that day, noting that it was not the first time she heard chaos coming from next door.
Ramos spent his final weeks living with his grandparents, ticking off the days until his 18th birthday on May 16, the first time he would be legally allowed to purchase firearms in the state of Texas. His grandfather, Rolando Reyes, said he was totally unaware Ramos had purchased any weaponry, realizing the grim reality only when his grandson was identified as the suspected gunman behind the school shooting.
Salvador Ramos had a dispute with his mother, causing him to move out.
Reyes had already left his home Tuesday morning when Ramos shot his grandmother. Another neighbor, 82-year-old Gilbert Gallegos, who has known the family for decades, said he was bopping about his yard when he heard gunfire break out across the street.
Gallegos said Ramos appeared panicked as he entered a truck parked in front of the house and then sped off. The teen was followed by his grandmother, who was covered in blood.
“She says, ‘Berto, this is what he did,” he recalled. “‘He shot me.’”
His grandmother was hospitalized and remained in stable condition. She was visited by Reyes, her daughter and Ramos’ mother on Wednesday.
“I’m very upset about everything,” she told NBC News. “A lot of stuff has happened, but right now, I don’t feel good.”
Police said that Ramos crashed his truck outside Robb Elementary School and then rushed to the entrance. Once inside the building he barricaded himself in a classroom and opened fire, fatally striking 19 students and two teachers.
He was killed by officers responding to the shooting. A motive in the slaying has not yet been revealed.
