Salmon flights, sorbet. New Kansas City restaurant’s globally inspired bites, drinks

A new Northland restaurant will offer seasonal menus of globally inspired bites and drinks.

Ombra, small plates and libations, plans to open in mid-December in The Village at Briarcliff, 4161 N. Mulberry Drive.

The opening menu has three sections:

For small plates ( a couple of bites) it will have such items as winter slaw (shaved Brussels sprouts, beets and almonds with a citrus vinaigrette), Scrapple fries (sliced fried pork loaf with dijonnaise), smoked salmon dip, and chicken confit.

Sharables (larger portions) will include a charcuterie board, salmon flight (salmon crudo, beet-cured gravlax and smoked filet) and Butterbrett (a variety of butters with bread and pickled mustard seed).

Sweets & Digestifs will include a seasonal cheese plate, apple raisin crumble, seasonal sorbet and custard, coffees and loose-leaf teas.

The menu will change every couple of months.

“We are focused on bringing smaller portions of all different cuisine types to the Northland and Kansas City in general,” said Sarah Nelson, chef and owner. “We will make our own compound butters, all of the charcuterie and fish preparation, working with local farmers and excited to offer seasonal fare.”

Her husband, Louis Guerrieri, is sous chef. The couple have been remodeling the space since April and finished a month ago.

Josh Melgoza will be the bar manager. Cocktails will include Midnight Oil (with tequila, squash water-tea, huitlacoche, sherry and pistachio) and Kalimotxo (with house red wine, orange-kola syrup and soda).

In February 2020, Nelson and her husband opened Sushi MO in the Crossroads’ Parlor food hall.

Then Kansas City restaurants had to close their dining rooms for the pandemic. They relocated to the open-air Iron District in North Kansas City but closed a year ago to concentrate on Ombra.
