During the global pandemic, people replaced going out to restaurants with cooking for themselves at home. In fact, the rise of baking, particularly baking bread, even caused a shortage in yeast and flour at one point. However, cooking works best with fresh ingredients, hence one brand seeing a major spike in containers for keeping produce fresh longer.

According to a rep for Tupperware, the brand shipped more products in July than it has in any month in the past 10 years. Additionally, over the past three months, Tupperware’s best-selling items have been the brand’s FridgeSmart containers (they start at $15 and there’s a 4-piece set for $94).

The FridgeSmart containers are made with a special seal and ventilation system that helps to reduce food waste and save consumers money by extending the life of produce. The containers have a sliding vent that controls airflow and moisture and can be changed based on the storage needs of each fruit or vegetable.

You know the crisper drawer in most refrigerators? Well, it’s like that. Most crisper drawers come with two settings: high humidity and low humidity. Closing the vent traps more humidity in, while opening the vent lets the humidity out. Fruits and veggies that tend to ripen faster or rot should be stored in low humidity, like apples, peaches, avocados and kiwis. Foods that tend to wilt — like spinach, kale, herbs, green beans and strawberries — should be stored in high humidity.

However, Tupperware isn’t the only brand to replicate this technique in container form. Rubbermaid also makes a set of produce-saving storage containers that are currently a best seller on Amazon with 74 percent of reviewers giving them five stars. Also available on Amazon, OXO Good Grips makes a produce keeper with sliding vents, available in three different sizes under $25.
