The New Orleans Saints added much-needed depth at wide receiver on Monday ahead of training camp.

According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the Saints are signing Chris Hogan. Yes, that Chris Hogan. He worked out for the Saints on Monday and clearly impressed while doing so. He’s putting his lacrosse career on hold to help New Orleans out at wide receiver.

Hogan, 33, spent the 2020 season with the New York Jets. He caught 14 passes for 118 yards. It’s unlikely he sees the field too often, if at all, with the Saints. But he will provide much-needed depth in the midst of the Michael Thomas news.

Thomas underwent ankle surgery and will miss all of training camp, as a result. It’s plausible he misses the first stretch of the regular season, as well. The Saints need help at the position, and they found it in Hogan.

Chris Hogan has played nine seasons in the NFL. His first four came with the Buffalo Bills before he joined the New England Patriots for three years, Carolina for one year and the Jets for one year. Hogan’s most productive season came in 2016 when he had 38 receptions for 680 yards and four touchdowns.

Hogan isn’t going to be the 2016 version of himself for the Saints. And it’s highly unlikely he makes the final 53-man roster. But he will provide valuable depth, particularly in training camp.

Speaking of which, New Orleans’ veteran players will report to training camp on Tuesday, July 27. Yes, Hogan will be there.
