New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas will officially begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

On Friday, it was reported that Thomas will miss the start of the 2021 season. The three-time Pro Bowler is still dealing with the aftereffects of June surgery on his injured ankle, which hampered him throughout 2020.

With Thomas expected to be out for the first six weeks of the new season, it’s no surprise he was officially placed on the PUP list today. The Saints also added veteran wide receiver Chris Hogan to the roster for depth.

Thomas underwent “major surgery” to repair torn ligaments in his ankle back in June. He injured it late in a Week 1 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year.

Overall, Thomas played in only seven regular season contests, catching 40 passes for 438 yards and no touchdowns. In the playoffs, he registered five catches for 73 yards and a score in two games.

With the six-year veteran out of action, the Saints will rely on Tre’Quan Smith, Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris to anchor the receiving corps, with Hogan and other potential additions providing support.
