Saints Fans React To The Sean Payton Speculation
It seems like almost every offseason, we have speculation about the Dallas Cowboys pursuing Sean Payton. It never amounts to anything.
Earlier this week, former NFL executive Mike Lombardi brought up the possibility of Dallas looking to replace Mike McCarthy with Payton following the Cowboys’ wild card playoff loss last weekend.
“Now, there has always been a linkage between the Dallas Cowboys and Sean Payton,” Lombardi said on the January 17 episode of “The GM Shuffle” podcast. “The Jones family loves Sean, Sean loves Dallas, Sean loves the Jones [family]. There’s a mutual, mutual love affair going on there. Can Sean get out of [his deal]? He has one year left on his contract with the New Orleans Saints. Can he get out of that? Is he allowed to get out of that? Could he just go walk over to Dallas?”
To put it bluntly, Saints fans are not buying what Lombardi selling, and they’re letting him know about it on Twitter.
He’s under contract through the 2026 season. Enough. https://t.co/08oQxZRVOG

Payton is exactly what Dallas needs. But sorry, this will absolutely NOT happen. https://t.co/zHgLd13nE4

Why would a coach (with a choice) would put himself in that situation? Why would he want to go to a place with no personnel input with the owner being involved in EVERY decision? And Jones is not firing Kellen Moore, so what would Payton’s job be? https://t.co/x4smwuJDsP

As several people noted above, Payton reportedly agreed to a contract extension back in 2019 that will keep him in New Orleans for the next several seasons. This would complicate any team’s effort to acquire him.
In short, it seems unlikely that Payton would leave for the Cowboys, and as of now, Dallas hasn’t given any indication it will get rid of McCarthy anyway.
