Sailor identified following death aboard aircraft carrier in Southern California

The United States Navy sailor who died over the weekend aboard the USS Carl Vinson, an aircraft carrier in Southern California, has been identified.

Darren Collins was an information systems technician assigned to the Navy’s third Nimitz-class supercarrier, Navy officials said in a press release on Monday.

The 22-year-old was an Oklahoma native from Arrow and joined the Navy in 2019, according to the statement. He attended Information Warfare Training in Pensacola, Fla., before reporting aboard the Carl Vinson in October 2020. The aircraft carrier was docked at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego when Collins died on Sunday.

The cause of his death remained under investigation on Tuesday, though officials at this time do not suspect foul play. Authorities have also said they have not uncovered any evidence to suggest a suicide.

“My deepest condolences go out to the Collins family in this time of tragic loss,” the carrier’s commanding officer, Capt. P. Scott Miller, said in a statement. “As shipmates we grieve the untimely passing of a talented young man.”

The Carl Vinson’s psychologist, chaplains and a counselor are on hand to provide support services to the crew, the Navy said.
