12-time Olympic medal winner Ryan Lochte missed qualifying for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo this year, but he’s not ready to call it quits in competitive swimming. Unfortunately, a knee injury may place his career on hold for a brief while.

On Sunday, Lochte’s wife Kayla revealed on Instagram that the six-time gold medalist is undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus. She said that Lochte suffered the injury while racing down an inflatable water slide with his kids.

“So Ryan’s at surgery,” Kayla Lochte told her followers in a video from the waiting room. “I don’t know if I told you guys how he tore his meniscus, so he’s getting that fixed this morning.”

“@ryanlochte A legend of lessons… don’t race down an inflatable kids water slide folks!” Kayla Lochte said.

Ryan Lochte just missed qualification for the Summer Olympics at the USA Summer Olympic Trials this past June. The 37-year-old swimmer finished seventh in the race final – just failing to make the cut.

But despite failing to reach what would have been his fifth Olympics, Lochte made it clear that he was not ready to retire.

“I’m still having fun,” Lochte said after failing to qualify. “I’m finding different ways making swimming fun again. I still want to race.”

Lochte medaled in gold four straight Olympics in a row between 2004 and 2016. He won the 4x200m freestyle four straight times, and also claimed gold in the 200m backstroke and 400m medley.

We wish Lochte the best of luck and a full recovery.
