Ryan Gosling’s Kids ‘Don’t Care’ Their Parents Are Stars: They ‘Fast-Forwarded’ Eva Mendes on “Bluey” (Exclusive)

“We thought it was going to be huge,” Gosling tells PEOPLE of Mendes’ appearance on the hit kids show, but “they didn’t like it”

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes aren’t movie stars — at least, not to their daughters.

“They don't care,” Gosling, 43, tells PEOPLE of daughters Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amada Lee, 8. While the longtime couple are two of Hollywood’s most prolific actors, “there’s nothing,” he says, that would make them anything other than parents.

“Eva was on an episode of Bluey,” adds the Barbie Oscar nominee. Considering their daughters’ love for the ABC Kids animated hit, “We both thought it was going to be huge.”

But Mendes, 50, voicing a yoga instructor in a 2021 episode got no response from the two kids. “They didn't like it,” he reports. “They were like, ‘Fast-forward through that part!’”

Gosling’s new movie, the David Leitch-directedThe Fall Guy, was especially a project not on Esmeralda and Amada’s menu, he says. Although he wanted to do plenty of his own stunts in the action-packed comedy, an homage to cinema’s most death-defying feats, the daughters exerted their veto power.

“My kids didn't want me to be set on fire,” says the producer-star. “They were like, ‘No. No fire.’ So I didn't do it.”

As Emily Blunt, who costars with Gosling in The Fall Guy, tells PEOPLE, kids “don't want you to be anything other than their parent.”

Her daughters Hazel, 9, and Violet, 7, who she shares with husband John Krasinski, are similarly resistant to thinking of their parents as movie stars.

“They've only seenJungle Cruise once because they don't love watching me on screen,” she explains. “Which I understand because I'm their mommy and it's very strange to see me play someone else.”

Not only is it strange, adds Blunt — it can also be distressing. “They didn't like the underwater stuff where I'm trapped and I'm in peril,” says the Oppenheimer Oscar nominee. “They left the room.”

Gosling also recently toldWSJ. Magazine about avoiding “roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place” in order to preserve his home life with Mendes, Esmeralda and Amada. “We make [decisions] with our family in mind first.”

In 2022, Mendes opened up about her years-long hiatus from acting, explaining onThe View, "I have such a short list of what I will do. Like before kids, I kind of was up for anything — I mean, if it was a fun project… Now I won't do violence, I don't want to do sexuality.”

The Fall Guy is in theaters now.
