Last season, the Miami Dolphins benched a red-hot Ryan Fitzpatrick for Tua Tagovailoa. It was a decision that left the journeyman quarterback understandably heartbroken.

“My heart just hurt all day,” Fitzpatrick said in October. “It was heartbreaking for me. Flo [Brian Flores] said what he said, and said what he said to you guys as well, and that’s the decision and direction the organization is going in. Obviously, we’ve talked in the past about how, I’m the placeholder, and this eventually was going to happen. It was just a matter of when, not if. It still just broke my heart yesterday and it’s a tough thing for me to hear and to know have to deal with. And I’m going to do my best with it.”

Miami actually used Fitzpatrick later in the season in a “relief pitcher” type of role, but it wasn’t enough to make the playoffs. After the season was over, Fitzpatrick signed a contract with the Washington Football Team.

Before he officially turns the page and looks forward to the next chapter of his career, Fitzpatrick addressed his final season with the Dolphins. He admit that he was seriously surprised when he was benched for Tagovailoa.

“But I thought it was a joke at first,” Fitzpatrick said, via The Athletic. “We’re putting Tua in? I was floored.”

Benching Fitzpatrick hurt the team in the short term, but it was a necessary move for the coaching staff and front office. Obviously, the Dolphins wanted to see what they had in Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa will be under a lot of pressure this season, especially since he’s performing well in training camp.

The Dolphins will start the 2021 season on the road against the New England Patriots.
