Following the Lakers’ loss to the Spurs on Monday night, Russell Westbrook opened up about the way his family has been treated lately.

Westbrook revealed that his family has received some death threats in recent weeks. Obviously, that type of harassment isn’t going to be allowed.

“I 100 percent stand behind my wife and how she’s feeling,” Westbrook told reporters. “When it comes to basketball, I don’t mind the criticism of missing and making shots. But the moment it becomes where my name is getting shamed, it becomes an issue.

“I’ve kind of let it go in the past because it never really bothered me. But it really kind of hit me the other day. Me and my wife were at teacher-parent conferences for my son. And the teacher told me, ‘Noah, he’s so proud of his last name. He writes it everywhere. He writes it on everything. He tells everybody and walks around and says, ‘I’m Westbrook.’ … And I kind of sat there in shock, and it hit me, like, ‘Damn. I can no longer allow people [to besmirch my name].'”

The former MVP also said the nickname ‘Westbrick’ is condescending to his entire family.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of the NBA world is taking Westbrook’s side here.

“The problem is way too many people get to say completely heinous and terrible things without consequence,” NBA analyst Josh Eberley said. “People typing death threats and going after a guy like Westbrook personally, attacking his family; should feel the repercussions. But social media platforms leave that all up.”

“If you’re threatening Russell Westbrook or his family over a child’s game…you need to rethink your priorities life,” NBA reporter Ben Stinar tweeted.

“I’m blocking anyone that justifies Russell Westbrook and his family constantly getting abused and receiving death threats because he’s making 40 million dollars, and is a professional athlete. No amount of money constitutes abuse and threats on his or his loved ones lives,” an NBA fan wrote.

Westbrook has struggled in his first season with the Lakers, there’s no denying it. However, sending threats to his family is just flat-out wrong.

Hopefully, NBA fans will show Westbrook’s family some respect moving forward.
